How to Find a Home for Everything

In the last post, we talked about WHY it’s important to have a place for everything in your home… but HOW do you figure out where things should go?

Here are a few tips to help you choose the best spot for everything:

1.     Maximize “prime real estate”: Store frequently used items in easily accessible locations. Keep those items within arm's reach or at eye level to minimize the need for bending or reaching. Reserve higher or lower shelves for less frequently used items or seasonal storage.

2.     Keep it where you use it: Store items where they are most likely to be used. For instance, place towels and toiletries near the shower, cooking utensils near the stove, and office supplies near your workspace. This reduces the time and effort required to retrieve items when needed.

3.     Consider size and weight: Store heavier items on lower shelves or closer to the ground to prevent strain when lifting or carrying them. Ensure that shelves and storage containers are sturdy enough to support the weight of your belongings and won't become overloaded or unstable.

4.     Make it accessible: Kids’ items should be within reach – think low cabinets or drawers in the kitchen for their plates/cups and lower hanging bars in the closet for clothes. For tall adults, limit storage options lower to the ground in favor of higher shelves and cabinets.

5.     Ensure visibility: Store items in clear containers or labeled bins to enhance visibility and make it easier to identify contents at a glance. Transparent storage solutions can also help prevent items from being forgotten or overlooked, reducing the likelihood of clutter buildup.

6.     Utilize vertical space: Maximize storage space by utilizing vertical storage solutions such as wall-mounted shelves, pegboards, or hanging organizers. Vertical storage not only maximizes space efficiency but also helps keep items off countertops and floors, reducing clutter and creating a more open and organized environment.

7.     Review and revise: Periodically review your storage system and make adjustments as needed. Regularly declutter and reorganize your belongings to ensure that your storage solutions remain effective and efficient over time.

The goal is to make it as simple as possible to find, access, and put items away. Following the tips above will help you create storage systems that make it easier for you to stay organized.
